The Gomer Mile! The wonderful Gomer Mile Sports Leaders are out on the field every break-time and look forward to seeing as many children as possible enjoying being active.
What is The Gomer Mile? The Gomer Mile is a safe, simple and measurable health and physical activity initiative accessible to all pupils regardless of age or ability. We aim to inspire and encourage our school community through physical activity with the focus on fun, rewarding personal achievement and school competition. We reinforce the message from the Department of Health that children should engage in regular daily physical activity habits across the week, every week all year round.
The Gomer Mile is an ALL YEAR ROUND initiative whereby pupils and staff can get involved. The participants will simply walk, jog or run around the Gomer Mile course within the safety of the school grounds.
Each participant will log the number of laps they achieve. Weekly, the Sports Leaders will convert the laps into miles and display the pupil’s progress via graphs, league tables and award the class with the weekly furthest distance.
The sports leaders will monitor the distance achieved and will reward participants with a certificate when they reach the following milestones:
10 Golden Miles – Bronze
25 Golden Miles – Silver
50 Golden Miles – Gold
75 Golden Miles – Emerald
100 Golden Miles – Ruby
150 Golden Miles – Diamond
Health Benefits The Gomer Mile allows the opportunity for pupils to enjoy being physically active, within the constraints of other pressures such as school learning time.
Regular physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits for Children. This includes reduced body fat and the promotion of healthy weight, enhanced bone and cardio-metabolic health, and will prove to enhanced concentration levels and psychological well-being back in the classroom.
The Gomer Mile will promote the recommended UK physical activity guidelines have recently been published by the Government:
- All children should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours every day.
- Vigorous intensity activities, including those that strengthen muscle and bone, should be incorporated at least three days a week.
- All children should minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary (sitting) for extended periods. By the time children start school, however, they are develop mentally ready to benefit from more intensive activity, over shorter periods, so a daily minimum of 60 minutes of moderate intensity activity is recommended.
